TRACK DETAILS

Mastering Video for the Web - Instructor: Tony Holbrook

This intensive one day class will cover an Internet Video Overview, trends in the industry, delivery methods, key online video format players like Quicktime, Flash, Microsoft Windows Media Video, Real Player, DivX, and others. Time will be spent reviewing video compression concepts in detail (CODEC's, streaming vs download, compression standards, etc) and an emphasis will be placed on encoding web video using Quicktime, WMV, and FLASH. We will also look at the various delivery methods and the pros and cons of each.

HD Video Primer - Pre & Post Production - Instructor: Phillip Hodgetts

Morning: HD formats An overview of the variety of HD formats with consideration of their strengths and weaknesses as formats with particular consideration of specific camera/format combinations. Although all HD formats will be analyzed, the primary focus will be on HDV, XDCAM HD/XDCAM EX-1, and DVCPRO/P2. We will also make sense of cameras that have more than 80 recording formats and why you'd want even half of them! Example footage will be shown and questions will be answered.

Afternoon: Post production workflows - and pitfalls. You've shot it or got it, now what do you do? We will deal with 23.98, 29.97 and 59.94 frame rates as well as knowing when to change codec for editing and when to stay native in the codec the footage was shot in. The session will also cover brining legacy SD material into HD productions and how to deal with projects that have been shot in different formats - even how to deal with the 7 different HDV variations. Before you leave the session you'll also know how to create graphics and animations for HD shows and what distribution options are available for HD distribution, including the latest on Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Aesthetics of Editing - Instructor: Matthew Levie

The editing process is where the essence, method, and theories of filmmaking and video production truly come together, where connections are made, comparisons are drawn, and film becomes art. In this class we will leave software and hardware behind and focus on the art and craft of cutting. The class will explore a wide range of concepts in editing such as juxtaposition, pacing, montage, the use of sound, and more. Examples will be drawn from narrative and documentary films as well as music videos, commercials and experimental films. This is primarily a lecture class, with an inspiring range of clips, and plenty of time for questions and discussion.
